PPO vs DMO (dental HMO) plans
A PPO plan lets you choose your dentist. You usually pay less with a dentist in the plan's network, and many PPO plans still pay part of the cost elsewhere. A DMO, often called a dental HMO, usually requires you to use an assigned network office, and care outside that office generally isn't covered. If you have a DMO plan, call us to check before booking.
Dental insurance terms, explained
- Deductible: what you pay each plan year before the plan starts sharing costs.
- Annual maximum: the most your plan pays in a plan year.
- Coordination of benefits: how two plans share a bill when you're covered by both.
- Waiting period: time after enrolling before some services, often major care, are covered.
- Frequency limits: how often the plan pays for a service, such as two cleanings a year.
Insurance Verification
Share your dental insurance details and we'll check your benefits before your visit, so you know your estimated out-of-pocket cost up front.
Coverage levels

When you book, we ask whether you'd like us to verify your benefits before the appointment. Say yes, and our front desk contacts your plan for you. If your treatment plan changes after an exam, we update your estimate before anything starts.
Two dental plans? We handle secondary coverage
Covered by a plan through work and another through a spouse or parent? Tell us about both. We handle secondary dental coverage and check how the two plans work together before your visit.

Your plan, fee by fee
Before larger treatment, we go through your treatment plan with you step by step: what each step is for, its fee, what insurance may cover and what your share would be. Then you choose the payment path that suits you: an insurance estimate, Plan for Health, monthly financing or paying in full.
Phased treatment
If your care needs more than one visit, we can talk about phasing it, so treatment is planned in stages and you know what each stage involves before it starts.

What affects the cost of dental care
Dental fees aren't one-size-fits-all. Your total depends on:
- the treatment you need, and how many teeth are involved
- materials and lab work, for example for crowns, implants or aligners
- the imaging and exams your case needs
- extra steps, such as an extraction, a graft or a deep cleaning first
- your plan's deductible, coverage level and remaining annual maximum
Whatever the treatment, you'll get an estimate before anything starts, and a Financial Consultation walks you through it fee by fee.

We accept dental insurance from 14 carriers: Aetna, Ameritas, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Delta Dental, Guardian, Humana, MetLife, Principal, Sun Life/DentaQuest, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem/Blue Cross Blue Shield, GEHA and Lincoln Financial. Benefits differ from plan to plan, so we verify your specific coverage before your visit. No dental insurance? Yes. Many people have a plan through work and another through a spouse or parent. One plan pays first as the primary, and the other may cover some of the remaining cost, under rules called coordination of benefits. Together they never pay more than the full fee. We handle secondary dental coverage: tell us about both plans and we'll check how they combine.
It depends on the cleaning you need: a routine cleaning is different from a deep cleaning for gum disease, and an exam or x-rays may be due at the same visit. We don't quote fees online, but we'll give you an estimate before your visit. Ask about Plan for Health, our in-office membership program for patients without dental insurance. It is not insurance, but offers savings on routine care. Ask the front desk what it includes.
Dental care involves a licensed team, sterilized instruments, imaging and, for many treatments, custom lab work such as crowns or aligners. Costs also climb when a small problem is left until it needs bigger treatment, so regular checkups can help you avoid larger bills later.
It depends on your specific Aetna plan. Some plans treat implants as major care and pay a share after the deductible, while others limit or exclude them, and waiting periods and your annual maximum also apply. Share your Aetna details and we'll verify your implant benefits and give you a written estimate before treatment.
A DMO (dental maintenance organization) is a type of dental HMO. You usually choose an assigned network office and pay set copays there, and care elsewhere is generally not covered. A PPO, by contrast, lets you choose your dentist. If you have a DMO plan, call us to check whether it can be used at our office.
Medical plans rarely cover dental implants. Exceptions can include tooth loss from an accident or a medical condition, depending on the policy. Implant coverage usually comes through a dental plan instead, such as a Blue Cross or Anthem dental PPO. We verify your dental benefits and tell you what applies before treatment.
A deductible is the amount you pay each plan year before your insurance starts paying its share for certain services. Many PPO plans waive it for preventive care such as cleanings and exams. Once it's met, you pay your coinsurance until the plan reaches its annual maximum. We check how much of your deductible is left when we verify your benefits.
Usually, yes. Dental care such as cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals and implants is generally an eligible FSA or HSA expense, while purely cosmetic treatment such as whitening usually isn't. Check your plan's rules before you pay.
