A second opinion at J Street, at a glance
J Street Dental Group gives second opinions in Sacramento to patients who have a diagnosis, treatment plan or estimate from another office and want an independent look before deciding. Bring your x-rays and plan to our Midtown office. Your dentist examines you, reviews the records, explains what's urgent and what can wait, and talks you through the alternatives. You leave with a clear opinion and a written estimate, and there's no pressure to switch offices.

Alternatives, with honest pros and cons
Our opinion and a written estimate
If the x-rays you bring are recent and clear, we use them. We take new ones only when we need a better view to give you a reliable opinion.
When a second opinion helps
A long list of work, all at once
We sort the plan into what needs care now and what can be phased over time.
Book a second opinionImplant, bridge or denture?
We compare the options for your bone, bite, timeline and budget.
About dental implantsCrown, root canal or extraction?
We check whether the tooth can be saved, and whether a simpler repair would do.
About restorative careAre aligners right for you?
We look at your bite and goals and tell you honestly whether clear aligners fit.
About clear alignersHow to send us your records
The more we can see, the more useful our opinion will be.
Ask your previous dental office for copies of your recent x-rays and your written treatment plan or estimate. Many offices can share digital x-rays electronically, so call us and we'll tell you the easiest way to get them to us before your visit. You can also bring copies with you.
A clear photo of the plan or estimate is fine too. If you don't have any x-rays, that's OK: we'll take the ones we need to give you a reliable opinion.
Call about your recordsWhat to bring to your second-opinion visit
- A photo ID
- Your insurance card, if you have one
- A list of your current medications
- Your previous x-rays, or the name and phone number of the office that took them
- The treatment plan or estimate you were given, plus any questions you've written down
What a second opinion can and can't tell you
A second opinion is an independent exam, not a verdict on another dentist. Often we'll agree with the plan you were given, and you can go ahead with more confidence. Sometimes we'll see things differently: a tooth that could be watched rather than treated now, a filling that might do instead of a crown, or a different order for the work. Dentists can reasonably disagree, so we explain our reasoning and show you what we see on your x-rays and in your mouth.
What we won't do is pressure you. You're welcome to take our written opinion back to your own dentist and continue your care there.
Questions worth asking about any treatment plan
- Which treatments are urgent, and what happens if I wait?
- What are the alternatives, including holding off for now?
- How long should each option last, and what upkeep does it need?
- Can the work be phased over more than one visit or year?
- What is my insurance likely to cover, and what will my share be?
Insurance and the cost of a second opinion
A second-opinion visit is an exam with the dentist. Before your appointment we can verify your insurance benefits, so you know what your plan covers. If we recommend treatment, you'll get a written estimate, and a financial consultation walks you through it fee by fee, with payment options such as monthly financing or phasing the work over more than one visit. No dental insurance? Ask about Plan for Health, our in-office membership program. It isn't insurance, but it offers savings on routine care.
If you decide to have treatment here
If you'd like us to take over, we'll plan the work with you, starting with anything urgent. Our dentists provide fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, dental implants and clear aligners in our office, and nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation is available if you're nervous. No. You can book a second-opinion visit yourself, online or by phone. Bring your x-rays and treatment plan, or ask your previous office to send them before your appointment.
We'll explain exactly what we see and why, show you on your x-rays, and lay out the options. Dentists can reasonably differ, and the choice of what to do, and where, stays yours.
Not always. If the x-rays you bring are recent and clear, we use them. If we need a better view of a tooth or the bone around it, we'll explain why before taking new ones.
Yes. We look at whether an implant, a bridge or a denture suits your bone, gums and bite, and whether you'd need an extraction or a bone graft first. Implant placement and grafting are both done in our office.
We examine the tooth, review your x-rays and test it if needed, then tell you whether it needs a root canal, a crown, a simpler repair, or can be watched for now. If saving the tooth isn't realistic, we'll explain extraction and the ways to replace it.
It depends on the exam and on whether you need any x-rays, so we don't list a price online. We'll check your insurance before your visit, and anything we recommend comes with a written estimate.
No. Many people take our opinion back to their own dentist. If you'd like to have your treatment here, we're happy to help, but there's no pressure either way.
